Peel-ply and grit-coated paddle faces may both feel textured, but their manufacturing mechanisms are different. The original Mayvoci article already makes that distinction; V2 goes further by separating general composite-processing evidence from paddle-specific process assumptions.

What Peel Ply Is in Composite Processing

Hexcel’s current composite-repair guidance describes peel ply as an optional consumable used during cure. It can allow passage of volatiles and excess matrix and can be removed after cure to leave a bondable or paintable surface. That is a general composite-processing fact, not a pickleball-specific performance claim.

In paddle manufacturing, a peel-ply contact surface can also leave a visible/tactile resin imprint. The exact result depends on the textile, resin, pressure, cure and removal process used in the actual paddle factory.

Texture Transfer Is a Process, Not a Material Slogan

The final paddle surface is the cured laminate/resin surface after the peel ply is removed; the peel-ply fabric itself is not the playing surface. Textile geometry, tension, wrinkles, resin flow and consolidation can change the transferred pattern.

That means “peel-ply carbon” should be controlled through both the consumable specification and the process. A supplier substitution that looks visually similar may still change the final surface.

Separate Peel-Ply QC From Grit-Coating QC

Main process variablesFabric, tension, resin condition, consolidation, removalParticle size/distribution, binder, application, cure

Wear questionDoes the resin-imprinted topography polish/flatten?Do particles/binder wear or shed?

This separation also helps content architecture: peel-ply belongs on its own process page, while grit coating belongs on the particle/binder page.

Resin Condition and Removal Need Their Own Acceptance Criteria

A resin-rich region may partially fill the textile pattern and appear smoother. Poor handling may create contamination or local damage. Removal direction and edge handling can affect cosmetic consistency.

The factory does not need to publish every proprietary processing parameter, but the buyer should be able to see that the consumable, cure/forming route and visual acceptance criteria are defined.

New-Sample Texture Is Not Lifecycle Evidence

A fresh surface can polish or wear during play and cleaning. If a brand markets spin retention or long-term texture, the evidence should include conditioned or used samples rather than only a new prototype.

Surface measurement is useful for process control, but it should not be converted directly into a spin claim without the applicable spin test method.

These are evidence tasks, not claims. Do not publish them as “our process” until the real photo, record or test exists.

Peel-ply consumable

Capture: Real peel-ply roll/sample and approved material label

Record: supplier, style/code, batch or approved status

After evidence exists: Show the actual consumable instead of a generic texture graphic.

Process sequence

Capture: Layup → cure/forming → peel-off photos

Record: sample/version, process step, date

After evidence exists: “The playing surface is created through a controlled contact-and-removal process.”

Macro surface map

Capture: Center/edge/corner macros from one approved paddle

Record: location, sample ID, condition

After evidence exists: Demonstrate how surface consistency is checked across the face.

Wear comparison

Capture: New vs defined-condition sample

Record: conditioning method and observations

After evidence exists: Publish a lifecycle observation only after the condition is documented.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is peel ply a coating?

No. It is a removable composite-processing consumable; the final surface is the cured laminate/resin surface.

Does general Hexcel peel-ply guidance prove how every paddle is made?

No. It supports the general composite principle. Paddle-specific results depend on the actual factory materials and process.

Is peel-ply the same as grit coating?

No. One relies on textile/resin contact during cure; the other adds particles or a textured coating system.

Does peel-ply guarantee high spin?

No. Spin requires separate evidence from the finished surface and relevant test method.

What should production QC inspect?

Pattern uniformity, resin condition, wrinkles/shifts, contamination, lot variation and wear where relevant.
