On-Site Pickleball Paddle Testing: What the GNG Machine Can—and Cannot—Tell You

Fast field screening solves a different problem from laboratory certification.

At a tournament, a director may need to decide whether a paddle should be investigated. In a factory, an engineer may want a quick comparison between production lots. In a club, a paddle that suddenly feels unusually powerful may justify additional screening.

UPA-A says it uses a Go/No-Go machine onsite at professional events. The device measures paddle deflection and is used as a proxy correlated with its laboratory power metric, PEF. That makes GNG useful—but it does not turn one deflection reading into complete paddle certification.

What the GNG Concept Measures

The field concept is based on deflection: how the paddle structure responds to a controlled load or displacement.

Deflection can reveal that a paddle has become more compliant or has shifted relative to its approved or known condition.

It does not directly measure every aspect of paddle performance. Spin, dimensions, construction declarations, surface, lifecycle and other requirements belong to broader compliance systems.

Why Field Screening Is Valuable

Speed is the main advantage.

A tournament cannot send every paddle to a lab in the middle of competition. A manufacturer also benefits from a fast check before committing development samples to more expensive testing.

Field screening is best used as triage: identify outliers, compare against a reference and decide whether further investigation is needed.

Use a Baseline, Not an Isolated Number

A single result is hard to interpret without context.

For manufacturing QC, compare production samples with the golden sample or approved baseline. For lifecycle evaluation, record a paddle when new and again after defined use or conditioning.

Trend and variation are often more informative than one number.

Field Deflection Is Not the Same as PEF

UPA-A describes GNG deflection as correlated with and used as a proxy for its coefficient-of-restitution-based power metric, PEF.

A proxy is not the same measurement.

Brands should not publish a field deflection result as though it were an official laboratory PEF result unless the method explicitly supports that conversion.

It Is Also Not a Spin Test

A paddle can screen normally in deflection and still have a surface-related compliance issue.

USA Pickleball is moving to direct spin-rate testing for new certifications beginning October 1, 2026. UPA-A also uses direct spin limits in its certification framework.

Keep power screening and spin testing as separate parts of the validation plan.

Manufacturing Uses

Factories can use field screening to compare pilot lots, detect unusual softening, investigate break-in, monitor retained samples and support complaint analysis.

The tool becomes more valuable when paired with batch ID, weight, thickness, balance and construction records.

Without traceability, an outlier only tells you that something changed—not why.

Tournament Uses

At competition, the value is rapid decision support.

A field device can identify a paddle that deserves removal, re-check or escalation according to the governing body’s current procedure.

The exact enforcement process belongs to the governing body, not to a manufacturer’s private interpretation.

Calibration and Repeatability Matter

Any screening device needs controlled setup, calibration, support location, loading method and repeatable operator procedure.

If two plants or two events use different setups, the numbers may not be directly comparable.

Treat the device as test equipment, with calibration and method control, rather than as a simple gadget.

Build GNG Into a Broader QC System

Combine field screening with dimensional inspection, weight and balance, surface inspection, material traceability, retained samples and the relevant formal certification testing.

That is the correct role: fast information inside a larger control system.

A field pass should never become permission to ignore the rest of the product specification.

Use GNG for Complaint Investigation

When a customer reports that a paddle suddenly became unusually powerful, compare the returned unit with a retained production sample and, if possible, the approved baseline. Record GNG/deflection result together with thickness, weight, visible damage and production lot.

If the returned unit is an outlier, escalate to deeper inspection or lab testing. If the retained lot shows the same shift, investigate the production process rather than treating the complaint as an isolated player issue.

Sampling Strategy Matters

One perfectly normal paddle does not prove that a batch is controlled.

For pilot or production screening, define how many units are checked, from which cartons or production times, and what triggers escalation. Trend the distribution across lots.

The tool becomes a quality-control method only when sampling and response rules are defined.

Do Not Publish Uncontrolled GNG Comparisons

If a brand posts field readings for competitor paddles, differences in equipment setup, conditioning, test location and calibration can turn the comparison into noise.

Use field data primarily for internal screening unless the method is documented well enough for external claims. That preserves the tool’s real value without overstating precision.

On-site deflection screening is valuable because it can identify a paddle that no longer resembles its expected structural fingerprint. It is not a substitute for a full laboratory certification result, and it does not diagnose why a paddle changed.

For factories and brands, the strongest use is comparative: approved reference, new production, conditioned sample and field-return sample. When one result falls outside the expected pattern, the next step is escalation into controlled investigation rather than a marketing conclusion.
