What started as a simple backyard game on Bainbridge Island, Washington, is now on the verge of achieving one of its most symbolic milestones—pickleball could soon be featured on a U.S. quarter!

The U.S. Mint recently announced the launch of the “Youth Sports Commemorative Coin Program,” which will release 20 designs between 2027 and 2030, highlighting popular youth sports in America. Pickleball is one of the 58 candidates vying for a final spot.

How Likely Is It That Pickleball Will Make It?

Right now, the U.S. Mint is inviting the public to rate all 58 candidate sports based on how visually appealing they would be on a quarter. The ratings range from “Highly Attractive” to “Not Attractive at All.”

Pickleball supporters are confident in its chances, pointing to its broad appeal and dynamic movement that would make for an engaging coin design.

Jeff Pritchard, the nephew of pickleball co-founder Joel Pritchard, believes that this could be a defining moment for the sport.

“Having pickleball on a quarter would truly put Bainbridge Island on the map,” Pritchard says. “A coin circulates for decades, even centuries. This means pickleball would become an undeniable part of American sports culture—something young people everywhere will see, recognize, and maybe even try.”

It all started in the summer of 1965, when Joel Pritchard, Bill Bell, and Barney McCallum invented pickleball to entertain a group of kids. Armed with ping-pong paddles and a plastic ball, they improvised a game on their backyard badminton court.

Little did they know, this casual family game would evolve into the fastest-growing sport in America.

  • In 2022, Washington state officially declared pickleball its official state sport under Governor Jay Inslee.
  • By 2023, over 35 million Americans were playing pickleball, with about 20% being youth players.
  • Schools across the country are adding pickleball to physical education programs, making it more accessible than ever.

Why Has Pickleball Exploded in Popularity?

Several key factors have contributed to pickleball’s meteoric rise:

Easy to Learn – Beginners can pick up the game in minutes and enjoy rallies right away.

Low Impact – Unlike tennis, pickleball is gentle on the joints, making it popular among all age groups.

Affordable – Entry costs are much lower than sports like tennis or golf, making it more accessible.

All Ages & Skill Levels – Kids, adults, and seniors can all play together, making it a truly intergenerational sport.

What Would a Pickleball Quarter Look Like?

If pickleball wins the vote, what could the design feature?

  • A young player executing a perfect dink at the net.
  • A powerful shot as a player smashes a forehand drive.
  • A historical tribute showing the three founders on Bainbridge Island, creating the game.

No matter what design is chosen, it would be a monumental milestone in the sport’s history.

Your Vote Could Decide Pickleball’s Future!

The U.S. Mint is now collecting votes from the public—and your vote could determine whether pickleball earns its place on a U.S. quarter!
