Choosing the perfect pickleball paddle involves understanding several critical metrics that significantly impact your game. This guide will introduce and explain the essential metrics: paddle type, weight, shape, face material, generation/build, swing weight, twist weight, balance point, spin rating, power, and pop. This knowledge will help you make an informed decision when selecting your next paddle.

1. Paddle Type

Description:

Control: Offers a softer feel, absorbs the pace off the ball, but provides less power.
All-Court: Blends power and control, performing well in all areas but not excelling in any specific one.
Power: Has a firmer feel, returns more power, but is harder to control.

2. Weight

Description:

Represents the inherent mass of the paddle, typically measured in ounces. It’s essential to consider both the static weight and the swing weight.

Importance:

The weight listed corresponds to the paddle’s weight used for swing weight and twist weight measurements. Variations in weight distribution can affect the perceived heaviness.

3. Shape

Description:

Elongated: Dimensions of 16.5″ x 7.5″, offers increased reach, spin, and power, but less forgiveness.
Standard: Dimensions of 16″ x 8″, provides less reach and power but greater forgiveness and control.
Hybrid: Between standard and elongated, offers a balance of reach and forgiveness.

Importance:

Advanced players often prefer elongated shapes, while lower skill levels opt for the forgiveness of standard shapes.

4. Face Material

Description:

Carbon Fiber: Consistent, plush feel, enhanced sweet spot, and control characteristics.
Fiberglass: More power, less forgiveness, stiffer feel.
Kevlar: Mix of power and control, often layered with other materials.

Importance:

The combination of materials can affect the paddle’s performance metrics.

5. Generation/Build

Description:

Gen 1: Cold pressing with polymer core, edge guard wrapped around.
Gen 1.5: Similar to Gen 1 but with foam injected around the perimeter.
Gen 2: Thermoforming method, carbon fiber perimeter, often with foam injection, providing more power and stability.
Gen 3: Similar to Gen 2 but with foam incorporated into the core.

Importance:

Each generation offers different benefits, from control to power and stability.

6. Swing Weight

Description:

Swing weight can be very helpful for determining how much harder a paddle may be to swing than what you’re used to. Here are some reference numbers:

<100 VERY low swing weight and the paddle will feel extremely fast in hand
100-110 still very fast in the hand and where most square paddle shapes average
110-120 is where a lot of elongated paddles average. Once you pass about 115, that’s when you may start to notice a small compromise in hand speed.
120+ These paddle will feel quite slow in the hand.

Importance:

Stock swing weights vary between 100 – 140.

7. Twist Weight

Description:

Resistance to rotating around the paddle’s long axis. Higher twist weight indicates a bigger sweet spot and more forgiveness.

Importance:

Twist weight numbers range from 5 – 8.

8. Balance Point

Description:

Distance of the paddle’s center of gravity from the butt of the handle.

Importance:

Higher balance points provide better ball carry but are harder to maneuver.

9. Spin Rating

Description:

RPM stands for revolutions per minute. I came up with a testing method to roughly estimate the spin potential of a paddle. This test is not perfect but I have found it to be a reliable test to determine whether plays at high spin levels or not. What I have found is that you need to look at paddles in a low tier, average tier, and high tier for spin. Anything <1200 is low tier. 1200-1400 is average tier and 1500+ is a high tier for spin. So don’t get caught up in what paddle is ranked 1-5. Usually at that point they are all fantastic for spin and the individual rank doesn’t matter nearly as much as knowing whether it’s a high tier or low tier spin paddle. Also know that paddles may get varying amounts of spin depending on you as a player. Some players may need a head light paddle to generate more head speed, others might need lighter weight, a longer or shorter handle, etc. This is simply meant to give you an estimate of the spin potential you can expect.

Importance:

Higher spin ratings help keep the ball in play, especially for big hitters.

10. Power

Description:

The power level of a paddle is shown in miles per hour (MPH) after taking ten measurements with a speed gun of hitting a serve as hard as I can. This measurement gives you an idea of how hard you can hit the ball when given the chance to take a full swing. So shots like serves, drives and overheads. The higher the MPH reading the more power you can generate with the paddle.

Importance:

Higher MPH readings indicate more power.

11. Pop

Description:

The pop level of a paddle is shown in miles per hour (MPH) after taking the average of ten speed gun measurements of hitting a punch volley as hard as I can. This measurement gives you an idea of how hard you can hit the ball on shorter swings and gives you an idea of how quickly a ball comes off the face when you apply less force on the ball. So shots volleys, dinks, counters, and resets are all affected by the pop measurement. The higher the pop measurement the stronger your counters will be but it takes more skill to keep the ball from floating or popping up on you when resetting a hard hit ball or when dinking.

Importance:

Higher pop measurements mean stronger counters but require more skill for control.

Conclusion

Understanding these metrics will help you choose a pickleball paddle that aligns with your playing style and enhances your performance. Whether you prioritize power, control, stability, or spin, knowing how each factor affects your game is crucial.
